Greek tragedy can be challenging to high school students. To help the actors visualize and physicalize the nature of the conflicts, I started the rehearsal process by recreating paintings depicting episodes from the story of Trojan Women. The production was in three-quarters round with the audience very close to the acting within a small space. My aim was for the stage picture to tell the story as vividly as the paintings we worked with in rehearsal from every audience point of view. In the costuming I leaned into the idea of Trojan opulence versus Greek austerity.
